"every war crime committed by U.S. forces calls for a reassessment and examination into how the tragedy could have been prevented"
WTF??? This is how the military has been slowly destroying itself for the last 20 years. This is a great mindset if they were capable of coming to the conclusion that everything was done correctly and this soldier is just a criminal. The military is backwards with their shit rolls uphill mentality. This level of thinking is why you have to radio in to request to return fire and other such moron moments in combat history.
At this stage in the game most of the junior NCO’s are just troops and have no decision making ability because the Sergeants can’t even train them without getting permission from the CO. Maybe…just maybe, it’s time to recognize that SHIT happens and bad people do fucked up things and stupid people crash motorcycles and die and nothing is going to stop that.
Instead of MICROMANAGING every instance of a WARRIORS life, we need to give them the best training we can, and let them do their job. I never bought into the “troops are a reflection of their leadership” as a whole. It doesn’t apply as a general rule. It works with some but not the majority. Kids today are too free thinking to be openly mimic their superiors even though most of them will benefit from doing so. Look at some of my past clerks up in the S-1. Some were damn good and others were completely morally, socially, and physically retarded…. The damn good ones were trainable and mold-able to what I needed or they needed to be. But ones who constantly thought I was wrong stayed the way we got them. (Yup talking about Knight here…)
This guy wandering off base and slaughtering 16 innocents is his own fault. Shit. He was SF. He probably SNUCK past base security. I for one am withholding judgement on the command until the final report of what actually happened comes out instead of buying into the media hype.
I don’t condone his actions but it’d be a disgrace to start relieving people who were over him because they didn’t know he got a bottle of booze in the mail that morning or because he maliciously SNUCK off base to do this. We cannot control the actions of every individual all of the time. and we shouldn’t be finger pointing at people who had NOTHING to do with the crimes.
